Limehills School has been named a finalist
in the inaugural Prime Minister’s Education
Excellence Awards, the only school in Otago
and Southland to be selected.
There were 163 schools across the country
who entered the awards, with 16 finalists
selected across five categories.
Limehills is one of four finalists in the
Excellence in Engaging Award and could win
up to $50,000 in prizes.
The entry was for Limehills’ Taste of Home
programme, designed and delivered by
teacher Kirsty Rodger and English language
assistant Melanie Logan.
Ms Rodger said the programme was about
the importance of celebrating the children’s
identities in the school community.
“When children have a place and are
proud of who they are, that’s great for their
learning,” she said.
One of the initiatives in Taste of Home is
a weekly Global Café where children cook
Kiwi food for parents, and share memories
from their home countries.
“The success of programmes like this has a
lot to do with the culture of the school – the
big ideas, the “can-do” attitudes, the energy
and the absolute buy-in of all teachers,
parents and children,” Ms Rodger said.
“We have very exciting technology at
Limehills which has enhanced the
children’s learning and ensured authentic
contexts and purposes. It has also allowed
us to preserve what children present
about their culture and their memories of
home for the wider school community and
relatives overseas to see and enjoy.”
Principal Jim Turrell said the school’s
selection as a finalist was a huge honour.
“We are just thrilled to have our efforts
recognised in this way. It’s an enormous
compliment to Mel and Kirsty who run
the ‘Global Kids’ programmes, but also
recognises the contributions from all our
outstanding teachers at school, our very
supportive parents and most importantly,
our talented and hard-working students.”
Other contenders are Otumoetai
Intermediate in Tauranga, St Thomas of
Canterbury College and early childhood
centre Toybox on Rawhiti in Auckland.
A panel of education leaders will visit
Limehills in the coming months to see the
programme in action, and winners will be
announced at a ceremony in Wellington in
