The fastest sheep at the recent Limehills
sheep racing event has been given a new
lease on life and will back to defend her title
Kauana farmer Richard England said
"Natalie" the sheep was destined for the
meat works, but her sporting prowess
has meant that she has been given some
"Yeah -- all the rest of her mob went on the
truck," he said, including the other sheep
which he had raced on the day without
Mr England said her breeding was "a bit
of a mix-up" with just under half Texel,
one-quarter Poll Dorset and the balance
However, he suggested that the hybrid-
vigour may have assisted with Natalie's
speed on the day, while the red racing
stripes which he had painted down her side
had also assisted.
"We did have a bit of a time trial down the
lane before the event, to see which sheep
However, he was surprised at her success
considering she was just a last minute
ring-in to help keep his other "flighty" sheep
company on the trailer.
"She was quite remarkable and won by
quite a distance. She just seemed to leave
them all behind and run for it."
At this stage he didn't have a special
training programme in place for Natalie,
although he thought he might take her for a
few jogs leading up to next year's event.
In the meantime, the plastic sheep which
she had received as a trophy, was taking
pride of place on the mantlepiece at home
and Natalie was relaxing in the holding
Stay of execution for woolly jumper
This sheep racing champion has been given a stay of execution -- originally destined for the meat
works she is has been spared in order to defend her title at next year's Limehills Sheep Races.
Hereford cattle breeders from throughout
the country have been in Southland this
week checking out the farming operations
of their southern counterparts.
Each year the New Zealand Hereford
Association takes members on a bus tour of
a different province. This year it's Otago-
Southland's turn and it has been 10 years
since the caravan last visited.
Chris and Jayne Douglas, and their son
Henry, owners of Monymusk Polled
Hereford Stud, near Te Anau, will host the
group on March 19. The previous night the
120 participants will stay in Te Anau and
attend a dinner and fundraising auction in
support of young breeders.
The Douglases are one of the larger
hereford breeders, with 160 cows and
selling about 30 bulls each year from their
on-farm sale around May or June.
They have played a big role in planning the
southern tour this year.
Other Southland properties to be visited
include Colin King's farm at Lillburn Valley
and Gordon Shearing's farm near Otautau.
Mr Douglas said a lot of organisation had
gone into the tour, both in the planning
of it and, from a personal point of view,
preparing to receive the visitors.
"Cleaning up yards, straightening fence
posts and things," he said.
