Holsts hit the barbecue
Back to Bed, Ed!

I took this beautifully illustrated
children’s book along to the
Manapouri Playgroup and read it
to the children.
It’s a story about a little mouse
called Ed, who loves going to bed,
but not staying there!
Here is what the children of the
Manapouri Playgroup had to say
“I liked the story”, “I liked the story
too”, ‘I take a toy to bed”, “I take
lots of toys”, “I stay in bed”, “I
don’t”, “I don’t too”.
This is a real read aloud book and
the children clearly enjoyed it.
There’s something almost iconic about
barbecued prawns, and these couldn’t be easier.
For 3 main or 6 starter servings:
500g frozen whole cooked prawns, thawed
3-4 cloves garlic, chopped
1⁄4 cup dry white wine
1⁄4 cup olive oil
1⁄4 tsp salt
pepper to taste
2-3 Tbsp chopped parsley
Place the thawed prawns in a shallow dish. Add the remaining
ingredients and stir gently to combine, then marinate in the fridge for
1-2 hours. Preheat the barbecue grill and cook the prawns briefly for 2-3
minutes per side.
Serve with crusty bread and a crisp green salad on the side.

I have to admit, this book took a
little getting into, it was at least

New Zealand Barbecue Cookbook

The addition of black bean sauce to these patties gives them a hint of
the exotic – it may see a little unlikely but it also seems to make them
extra popular with children too.
For 12-18 patties:
3 slices (90-100g) bread
1⁄2 small-to-medium onion, peeled
500g beef mince
1 large egg
2-3 Tbsp black bean (or black bean and garlic)
Tear the bread slices into quarters and place
in a food processor fitted with the metal
chopping blade. Process until finely crumbed,
then transfer to a bowl. Add the onion to the
processor and chop very finely. Tip the crumbs back into the processor,
add the mince (broken into golf ball-sized pieces), the egg and the black
bean sauce. Process in short bursts until evenly mixed (try not to over-
mix or you will toughen the patties).
Divide the mixture into rough golf ball-sized portions and shape into
patties about 2cm thick.
Preheat, then lightly oil the grill or hotplate and cook the patties over a
medium-high heat for 3-5 minutes per side or until the largest patties
are cooked through.

In this book the author recounts his own
dramatic survival of a plane crash as an
eleven-year-old boy in 1979. The event
leads to the loss of his father who was
also coach and hero for this gifted boy
growing up in Malibu.
Although at times some patience is needed with the mention of every
detail and term in regards to surfing and skiing it is worthwhile enduring
to get a close insight into this ambivalent father-son relationship.
Norman is a teenager struggling to deal with the pain after an
unsuspected death, as anybody would, but he can eventually see the
big picture and message his Dad taught him: there is more to life than
just surviving it.

Dowlers are bad guys. A Dowler
is a wolf mixed with a dog. Well
that’s what I think anyway. The
